With seven laps remaining before the end of the Grand Prix, the Sauber C32 had been lifted by the recovery vehicle to transport it back to the pitlane and while doing this the worker dropped his radio and attempted to pick it up. As he did this, he stumbled and was hit and run over by the recovery vehicle.
It is the first death in F1 since the 2001 Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne, when track marshal Graham Beveridge lost his life after being struck by a flying wheel from Jacques Villeneuve's BAR-Honda.
