The McLaren F1 team is reportedly considering switching from Mercedes to Honda engines, with the Woking-based outfit not willing to stump up the £8million that the German manufacturer is asking for their engines from next season.
Speaking to The Sun, a source said that there is no way McLaren will stay as a customer for Mercedes engines.
Leading German automobile magazine, Auto Motor und Sport, claims that Honda is likely to be Mercedes' replacement, having dominated F1 with McLaren in the late 80s and early 90's. The German publication reports that McLaren and Honda may team up when F1 shifts to V6 turbo engines in 2014.
According to racecar-engineering.com, the Japanese car manufacturer is poised to make an F1 return as an engine supplier the season after next.
"The rumours are not unfounded, but we have not decided anything. We are constantly evaluating the situation," a company source is quoted as saying.
